Shenandoah Receives Two Nominations For Nov. 2, Native American Music Awards

Indigenous music icon Joanne Shenandoah has been nominated for two awards for the 2019 Native American Music Awards set for November 2 at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY.


Shenandoah’s powerful video “Missing You” about the thousands of missing and murdered Native women has been cited for “Best  Music Video Narrative” and her single “We Will Rise Up”, an emotional call to overcome the conditions of oppression, is marked in the “Best Indie Single of the Year” category.


Shenandoah has been the recipient of 14 NAMMYS since the awards were begun in 1998.  She has been a strong proponent for Native music throughout her career which has included over 40 music awards, a GRAMMY, a recent EMMY nomination for music and sound (PBS) and concerts in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Vatican.


Shenandoah also took part in a year long series of hearings held by the US Justice Department under the Obama administration to address the issue of children exposed to violence on Native territories throughout America. She served as Co-Chair for the 24 member committee which secured over a billion dollars in allocations from the US Congress in response to its recommendations through the Department of Justice.


Shenandoah is now on the road to recovery after a prolonged illness and is working on new recordings. She recently took part in a PBS documentary honoring the career of the late Lakota musician Buddy Red Bow, a member of the NAMMY Hall of Fame.


In addition to Shenandoah’s two nominations other Iroquois artist have been selected including: Bear Fox, Murray Porter, Irv Lyons, Nick Lone and the blues band The Ripcords.
