Republican Candidate for Oneida County 19th Legislative Seat

Stephen A. Roefaro announced today he is a candidate for the Oneida County Board of Legislators in District 19 in Utica.

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for Legislature. My educational, professional and community experiences are perfectly suited to execute the duties of this office and get results,” said Roefaro. “I understand the varied responsibilities of the position, that they cannot be taken lightly, and must be given the day-to-day attention that they require.”

He said he’s focused on making Utica and Oneida County a better place. A professional real estate appraiser and former county legislator, Roefaro said he’ll be a tireless advocate for the people of the 19th District. He said he’ll be independent-minded in making decisions that put the residents first.

“I feel that my 20 plus years as a private business owner and my previous political experience in this office makes for the perfect mix to represent the 19th,” said Roefaro.

Among his priorities:

–          Keeping an eye on county spending and, in particular, county property taxes.

–          Taking a look at how county expenses related to Mohawk Valley Community College are apportioned among municipalities in the budget.

–          Reviewing the level of services Utica residents receive through the county budget.

–          Monitoring the downtown Utica hospital project and plans for reuse of the two existing hospitals, especially the St. Elizabeth campus.

–          Enacting term limits for elected officials at the county level.

“I look forward to speaking to the citizens of Utica as I campaign in their southside neighborhoods this summer and fall,” said Roefaro. “I want to be part of helping the county move forward.”

He previously served on the Board of Legislators for two terms, 2008-2011. Accomplishments and achievements he points to from back then include: helping the Utica Zoo overcome a dire financial situation that threatened its continued operation; establishing the Oneida County Public Market at Union Station; resurrecting the county program that provides summer internships for college students; creating the Fire Hawk scholarship program for volunteer firefighters who want to attend Mohawk Valley Community College; streamlining the City and County delinquent tax foreclosure process to run concurrently; and working to get the City of Utica more codes funds.

He is running for the seat now held by fellow Republican Edward P. Welsh, who is retiring at the end of his term after serving 18 years a county legislator.
