By Indivisible Mohawk Valley
Tens of thousands of people in the Mohawk Valley see through the appalling, unethical actions of this Administration, causing perpetual dysfunction of government. However, many don’t know what to do about it. If you’ve been yelling at the screen and feeling alone, it’s time to stop. Get off the couch and join like-minded people in Indivisible Mohawk Valley (IMV) right now.
IMV is a group of concerned citizens who self-organize around events and projects that strengthen our bond and community with one another while standing up peacefully and non-violently to the destructive, corrupt, and undemocratic forces in American politics. We are dedicated to championing social justice, to working to support progressive values, and to electing progressive candidates to office at every level of government. We are a civic engagement and political activism community with the goal of making political activism bite-size, local, and fun.
We learned in early 2017 from the Indivisible Guide that even though we are up against a conservative agenda of cruelty, hate, and harm, we still have power, and we learned how to use it. You have power too. Are you using it? Each of us has constituent power because of the belief that those in elected office want to stay in office, and in order to do that, they need to be responsible and responsive to their constituents (people who live in their district). If your elected representatives, all the way from the school board to the presidency, don’t advance your values and vision for a more equitable society, then use your power to vote them out and put someone else in.
For three years Indivisible Mohawk Valley has been resisting the Trump agenda through grassroots organizing, forming relationships with allies such as Citizen Action, 1199 SEIU healthcare union, Mohawk Valley Latino Association, the YWCA, Interfaith coalition, Sunrise Movement, Extinction Rebellion, and other Indivisible groups in NY22, while taking action together. We bring national actions to the local level such as the Lights for Liberty vigils around the world in July 2019, Impeachment Eve Rallies last December, and along with the #ClimateStrike. One of our most exciting actions was organizing the protest against Donald Trump when he headlined a local fundraiser for Congresswoman Claudia Tenney’s re-election in downtown Utica. IMV joined forces with 1199 SEIU and Citizen Action in August 2018. It was so empowering to have nearly 2000 people fill 3 city blocks in a passionate, peaceful, non-violent protest. Were you there too?
We combine our strength in grassroots organizing with our ability to inspire people to turn their despair into power to impact elections at every level. In 2018, we learned how to knock on doors to talk to voters, and helped elect Senator Rachel May and Congressman Anthony Brindisi. They replaced their predecessors who were inauthentic representatives enabling those in power with conservative values that didn’t align with our vision of what is best for our area. We’re doing it again in 2020 because democracy is not a spectator sport.
