A campaign to promote testing for men to detect cancer, Real Men Get Tested, was launched today through a group associated with the Community Foundation. Business leader Tim Reed and radio personality Bill Keeler, who both received treatment successfully for cancer in the last year, launched the non-profit program, which targets men in the Mohawk Valley.

“We’re asking guys to take our pledge to communicate with their health care provider along with family and friends and get tested,” said Reed. “Men often times ignore the warning signs and avoid the simple tests like the PSA blood test and colonoscopies which can detect cancer early while it’s treatable. If we can just convince one guy to get tested, we’ve done our job.”

The program will run through Father’s Day 2020 and will use a media campaign (Television, Radio, Print, and Web) and the website www.RealMenGetTested.com to educate men and inspire them to reach out to their healthcare provider for advice on cancer testing. Men are most commonly associated with prostate, colon, lung and skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. Routine testing increases the chances of detecting cancer at an early stage when it is most treatable. By taking the pledge (available for download on the website), men vow to communicate with their health care provider, pay attention to possible warning signs and get tested for cancer as recommended by their physician.

In September, Reed was diagnosed with prostate cancer and received radiation treatment and in February, Keeler underwent colorectal surgery for colon cancer; both are now considered cancer-free.
