Mohawk Valley Community College’s Math Corps program is seeking applicants for its 2019 summer camp. The free program will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from July 8 until Aug. 1, and is for students who will be attending school in Utica in the sixth, seventh, or eighth grades this fall, including John F. Kennedy Middle School, James H. Donovan Middle School, Notre Dame Junior High School, and the Utica Academy of Science Charter School. The program is also open to Utica-area high school and college students who will act as mentors in addition to learning advanced math concepts. The deadline to apply is June 25.

MVCC Math Corps helps Utica middle school and high school students develop a love for learning in a safe, family-like environment. Through strong mentoring relationships, the program builds a self-perpetuating corps of students from middle school through college, who excel academically, hold personal values that breed success in general, and who pass their knowledge and values on to younger students. As they grow, those younger students do the same.

This is the third year of the Math Corps program at MVCC. In 2017, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a nearly $3 million grant to Math Corps, a partnership that includes MVCC, Wayne State University in Detroit, Cleveland State University, and a not-for-profit organization in Philadelphia.

The program, originally developed in 1992 by Wayne State University, works to ensure that every child goes on to graduate from high school fully prepared to succeed in college or other rewarding post-secondary endeavors with confidence in their own ability to build a good life for themselves and others. The program won the New York Life Excellence in Summer Learning Award in 2016.

MVCC Math Corps applications are being distributed in Utica-area schools and organizations. For more information about Math Corps, call 315-792-5393 or visit www.mvcc.edu/math-corps<http://www.mvcc.edu/math-corps>.
