It is a sad day here at The Utica Phoenix and Phoenix radio to hear the news that the beloved Queen of Soul-Aretha Franklin, has died today at the age of 76 due to Pancreatic Cancer, in her Detroit home.
Aretha’s publicist Gwendolyn Quinn , released a statement by the family regarding the singers passing “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts. We lost the matriarch and rock of our family.
Ironically, Aretha shares this day with another music legends, The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley who passed away 41 years ago today…
Aretha’s mark on the world and music is clearly recognized as one the most transcendent cultural figures of the 20th Century. She blossomed out of her father’s Detroit church and became the most distinguished female black artist of all time. She broke boundaries while placing hit after hit on the billboards, R&B chart. She had 20 number one hits throughout her career and leaves behind legendary iconic songs such as Respect, Natural Woman, and Rock Steady… This amazing artist won a total of 18 Grammy Awards,and sold over 75 million records worldwide. Rolling stone Magazine named her one of the top 100 Greatest Artist and singers of all time.
