New York State Supreme Court Justice James P. Murphy recently announced that he will seek re-election to a second fourteen-year term this November.
“Serving as a Supreme Court Justice has been the highlight of my legal career,” said Murphy, who was first elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2004. “I believe I have served with fairness and integrity, and I’m proud to place my record before the voters of the Fifth Judicial District this November.”
In addition to his duties in the General Civil Trial Part of Supreme Court, where he handles the most serious and complex civil cases, Murphy serves as District Coordinating Judge for the Town and Village Courts, overseeing approximately 250 local judges. He is also Acting Administrative Judge for the Fifth District.
He currently is the elected President of the Onondaga County Bar Association, and has served on that organization’s Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Finance Committee. He serves as Secretary of the Judicial Section of the New York State Bar Association.
A native of Syracuse, Murphy is a graduate of Bishop Ludden High School, St. Lawrence University and Syracuse University College of Law. He has been an attorney for over 30 years. Earlier in his career, he served three terms as a member of the Onondaga County Legislature.
Judge Murphy and his wife Alice make their home in Skaneateles. They are the proud parents of two adult daughters, Jessica and Emily. The Fifth Judicial District includes Onondaga, Oneida, Jefferson, Oswego, Lewis and Herkimer counties.
